21 Feb How I Make a Living While Traveling the World
People often ask me how I am able to travel so often and not go completely broke. We all want to travel more, but if you’re like me, can’t afford to spend all of our time and money on endless vacations. It’s a nice thing to daydream about but this is the real world and we need to make a living!
I have been lucky enough to travel to some pretty awesome destinations but one thing I always bring along is my computer. As a web designer, I can work from anywhere in the world as long as I have internet access. Whether I am in Italy, Hawaii or Australia I am always working while on travel. This means taking client phone calls, answering emails, and working on whatever current projects I have. I usually spend mornings getting work done then spend the rest of the day exploring the city I am in.
Mixing work and travel can make for a pretty incredible life but the key is making sure the work actually gets done. Want to know my secrets? Here are some tips on how I stay productive and make a living while traveling the world.
Find a Job With Some Flexibility
We live in an internet based world and there are so many ways to make money online! As a web designer it is important that I meet with clients every so often but most of the time I can work anywhere from Paris to Sydney. Having a job that requires your presence each day and ties you down probably won’t work out too well so an online business is the key to success. Think about what goods or services you can offer online, and how you can turn that into a money making machine. It may be an online store, freelancing, online coaching, or working for a company that allows you to telecommute.
Set a Schedule
The temptation to ditch work and sightsee is dangerously high when halfway around the world. I mean, how can you sit there and work while in London or Milan? The answer is you simply have to. Set a schedule so you know when it’s time to focus on getting things done and stick to it. I like to work for at least 4 hours in the morning then I can enjoy my afternoon and evening without any stress. If you aren’t keeping your projects moving along your clients will start asking questions wondering what’s taking so long. Traveling is great but keeping up your good reputation is more important.
Communication is Key
Communication is so important when traveling the world while running a business. When home, I work in an office with a killer team of designers and developers and we always collaborate on projects. I need to know what’s going on and stay connected with my team whether I am in the office or not. Basecamp 3 is a great tool for keeping up that communication, managing projects, delegating tasks, and managing time. You can keep track of all your projects on your computer, mobile device, and even apple watch! When someone checks something off the to-do list, I get a notification.
Work on Building Passive Income
One thing I learned early in life is to get the job done with the least amount of effort possible. Getting started building passive income can be a lot of work but, once established will bring money in every month! Some great examples of this are writing and selling an e-book, hosting websites, or paid subscription service. The goal is to create something once and sell it a thousand times. I absolutely love both of Mindy Kaling insanely funny books. I think I read Why Not Me? in a day.
Save as Much as You Can
Traveling does not always mean living in luxury like you’re Kim K or Beyoncé. It definitely takes money to travel and it’s best to save as much as you can both before you go and while on a trip. If you are a regular online shopper or get Starbucks every morning chances are you are blowing through a lot of money that could go towards a trip to Europe! Would you rather spend your money on material things or epic experiences? For me, experiences always win. When I am not traveling I am working (a lot) and not spending much of that hard earned money. Then while on a trip I stay at reasonably priced hotels and don’t go on a ton of tours and excursions. There are so many things you can do for cheap (or free!) and still have a great time!
There is no greater adventure in life than jet setting to a new country. We all have bucket lists and are definitely capable of crossing those places off our list. By merging work and travel it is possible to make a living while traveling the world. What destinations are on your bucket list? Leave me a comment below!
